Young readers are invited to read aloud to each other from the opening chapters of Sara Pennypacker’s book Pax. We will read from on-screen text for about forty-five minutes. A few days later, children who participated in the session will get a copy of the book in the mail to continue reading at home. Pax and Peter have been inseparable ever since Peter rescued him as a kit. But one day, Peter’s dad does the unthinkable; he enlists in the military and makes him return the fox to the wild. At his grandfather’s house, hundreds of miles from home, Peter knows he isn’t where he should be—with Pax. Spurred by love, loyalty, and grief, he strikes out on his own to find his fox. Meanwhile Pax, who must learn to live in the wild after his sheltered life, changes too. Their journey to reunite is told in two voices, alternating between Peter’s and Pax’s point of view.
