Virtual Gallery + Studio: Making a Space Called Home

    Raphael Noz holds an MS degree in education from Wheelock College and an MFA from California College of the Arts. His multidisciplinary art has been exhibited at venues including BAMPFA and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. He currently works as a teaching artist at the de Young Museum.

Edie Fake created Affordable Housing for Trans Elders, his large, architecturally inspired mural on BAMPFA’s Art Wall, in response to a personal friend’s difficult search for a place to live. It is the artist’s hopeful and joyful vision for an individual and a community in need of housing. Using papers of many colors along with other materials, design a highly patterned façade and transform an ordinary box into a visionary model of housing for a person or group of people you imagine needing it most. Workshop led by Raphael Noz.

Materials

Please gather these materials before the session:

  • A box. It can be anything from shoebox-sized to something twice that size, maybe from something recently delivered.
  • Construction paper in assorted colors, or other colored paper
  • Scissors
  • A glue stick, or simple liquid glue (like Elmer’s)
  • A pencil
  • A black crayon or pastel stick or marker

Also useful, but not required:

  • A ruler
  • A box cutter or utility knife, but only if an adult will use it for you
