Deftly combining footage from more than twenty camera operators, Gimme Shelter scrutinizes the ill-fated free concert hosted by the Rolling Stones at the Altamont Speedway in 1969. The film shuttles in time and space between the offices where lawyer Melvin Belli negotiates the use of the speedway, the band’s performances, and the editing studio where band members review the footage leading up to the death of a young concertgoer. The inspired structure affords the viewer an intimate point of view, watching the band watching themselves and the mayhem they unwittingly unleashed.
