Curators’ Talk: María Esther Fernández and Laura Pérez on Amalia Mesa-Bains: Archaeology of Memory
Join cocurators María Esther Fernández and Laura Pérez—who organized this major retrospective exhibition of the work of renowned artist, scholar, and curator Amalia Mesa-Bains—for an insightful talk about the artist’s work in BAMPFA’s galleries.
María Esther Fernández is the inaugural artistic director of the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art and Culture, which opened at the Riverside Art Museum, California, in June 2022. Formerly the chief curator and deputy director of the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, California, she has curated numerous solo and group exhibitions, including Xicanx: Spiritual Reflections/Reflexiónes Espirituales (2010) and Consuelo Jimenez Underwood: Welcome to Flower-Landia (2013). She is working on a major retrospective of Judithe Hernández’s work, set to open at the Cheech in 2024.
Laura Pérez is a professor in the Department of Ethnic Studies and chair of the Latinx Research Center at UC Berkeley. She has published in numerous anthologies and journals on the work of feminist and queer US Latinx artists and has curated several exhibitions of Chicana and Latina artists. She is the author of Chicana Art: The Politics of Spiritual and Aesthetic Altarities (2007) and Eros Ideologies: Writings on Art, Spirituality, and the Decolonial (2019), and the coeditor, with Dr. Ann Marie Leimer, of Consuelo Jimenez Underwood: Art, Weaving, Vision (2022).
