Ten years ago, Berkeley computer science professor Stuart Russell, one of the world’s leading AI researchers, told a lecture audience that achieving artificial general intelligence “would be the biggest event in human history . . . and perhaps the last event in human history.” More recently, dozens of computer scientists signed a statement warning that the societal threat posed by AI is on par with nuclear war and global pandemics. In Russell’s book Human Compatible, he charts a more optimistic course for superintelligent AI—one carefully regulated to benefit humanity. Stuart Russell is Professor of Computer Science and the Smith-Zadeh Chair in Engineering at UC Berkeley, where he also directs the Center for Human Compatible Artificial Intelligence. He is the author, with Peter Norvig, of the standard text on AI, Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach, taught at over 1,400 colleges and universities worldwide,
