Curatorial Excellence Recognized in Awards from
The Getty Grant Program and The Apple Valley Foundation

Berkeley, CA, 7 April 2004 - Constance Lewallen, Senior Curator for Exhibitions at the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA), is the recipient of a 2004/2005 Curatorial Research Fellowship from The Getty Grant Program of The J. Paul Getty Trust in Los Angeles. The fellowship provides a stipend in the amount of $13,000 in support of her research project titled "Bruce Nauman and the San Francisco Bay Area Conceptual Movement." Under the terms of the award, Lewallen will spend two months this year focusing on her research for this project, supported by The Getty Grant Program.

Constance Lewallen has also received a Curatorial Excellence Award in the amount of $5,000 from The Apple Valley Foundation, which acknowledges and rewards, in the form of a travel grant, superior work in the field of curatorial studies. Lewallen was one of two curators receiving the honor, based on the exhibition "The Dream of Audience: Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, 1951–1982," which opened at the UC Berkeley Art Museum in September 2001. The exhibition has since traveled to venues in the U.S. and Korea, and is currently on tour in Europe. The goal of The Apple Valley Foundation Curatorial Excellence Award is to encourage talented curators to expand and explore new ideas by visiting exhibitions organized by their peers. The Award was announced following visits by Foundation members and other experts in the field to 50 sites in the Midwest, Pacific Northwest and California. Curatorial projects were evaluated for their didactic and aesthetic qualities, creativity and physical presentation.

"These two awards will provide time and financial resources to expand my research in the history and contribution of the San Francisco Bay Area conceptual movement," said Lewallen. "I am extremely grateful to both The Getty Grant Program and The Apple Valley Foundation for their support of my project."
