Artist Paul Kos joined us recently for Catch Up with Conceptual Art, a special members’ class with Adjunct Curator Constance M. Lewallen. The morning kicked off with a brief history of Conceptual art, including Duchamp’s Fountain and Sol Lewitt’s Sentences on Conceptual Art. We then previewed the upcoming exhibition State of Mind: New California Art circa 1970, which features a pair of films by Kos, as well as his famous Sound of Ice Melting. Finally, Kos screened some of his early films and treated us to an impromptu art performance. He wrote—with amazing ambidexterity—a quote by the Swiss artist and writer Daniel Spoerri: “When all the other art forms fail, the art of cooking will prevail.”
