Join Collections Engagement Associate and Academic Liaison Lynne Kimura for Yoshitoshi's Prints Up Close, a discussion of Brave Warriors and Fantastic Tales: The World According to Yoshitoshi exhibition.

Taiso Yoshitoshi was the last great ukiyo-e print designer, and he was lucky enough to work with master carvers and printers at the peak of the genre’s technical innovations, such as embossing, the use of metallics and lacquer, intricate shading, and Western chemical pigments. This presentation offers a chance to dig in and examine a few exceptional prints from late in the artist’s career for their dramatic compositions, deft storytelling, cultural mythmaking, and the expertise of artisans soon to be put out of work by the advent of photography, lithography, and other fashionably “modern” technologies. 

Lynne Kimura, BAMPFA Carmel and Howard Friesen Collections Engagement Associate and Academic Liaison, did her honor’s thesis at UC Berkeley on mitate-e, woodblock prints that parody literature, legend, and political events, and has been a fan of Yoshitoshi’s art ever since. Lynne has a master’s degree in Japanese cultural studies from Yale University and has worked with the BAMPFA Asian collections for more than twenty-five years.
