Letter to the Land: Chlorophyll Printing Workshop with Tara Ani Baghdassarian
Space is limited; first come, first served.
Join local artist Tara Ani Baghdassarian in a chlorophyll printing workshop where images on transparencies are naturally transferred onto organic matter using sunlight. This process was pioneered by Binh Danh, the child of Vietnamese refugees, who used this technique to transfer archival images of the Vietnam war and genocide victims onto leaves indigenous to places where those experiences occurred. In this workshop, we create messages to the land that examine themes of nature, memory, and ephemerality.
Tara Ani Baghdassarian is an interdisciplinary artist and activist of Armenian descent who works with film, illustration, shadow theater, music, and other experimental media. She has recently returned to the Bay Area after spending five years in Armenia, her ancestral homeland. Drawing from bicultural experiences as a first-generation American and repatriated citizen of Armenia, her work addresses memory and erasure, legacies of trauma, and existential threats to ethnic identity. Much of her work is also rooted in meditation and nature as resistance to the ever-industrializing, digitalized world.
